Healthiest Types of Nuts

Everywhere I look, almonds come up #1 on the list. I’m ambivalent about almonds. I mean, if they are in a Hershey bar, I might eat them, but I wouldn’t seek them out. Green beans with almonds do nothing for me. My choice is pecans over any other nuts. They are great in brownies, sweet potato casserole, pecan pie (who ever heard of almond pie?), in place of walnuts, and candied for snacking. Pecan, the queen of nuts.

But when it comes to nutrition, not all nuts are created equal. My Recipes spoke with Malena Perdomo, MS, RDN, CDE, about the health benefits of nuts and which ones we should be reaching for first. She ranks the healthiest nuts in this order:

  • almonds
  • pistachios
  • walnuts
  • cashews
