A massive food poisoning outbreak led to a traceback investigation, which discovered a recent nationwide Salmonella outbreak originated with onions that had been sourced from Mexico. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published information that reveals 652 people have gotten sick and 202 hospitalized, with cases reported in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. [Additional onions have been recalled so this is now extended to all 50 states and Washington DC. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea that lasts more than three days and is not improving, bloody diarrhea, fever higher than 102 degrees, excessive vomiting and inability to keep down liquids, and signs of dehydration, including not urinating, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up.
Symptoms typically start 6 hours to 6 days after eating the affected food. Most people recover without treatment after 4-7 days but the illness can be especially dangerous for children young than 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems. Read more HERE.
