A Garbage Jar?
I read an article by Stacey Ballis about having a kitchen garbage jar. I was thinking compost when I saw the headline, but that’s not what this is at all. Not really garbage, but the leftover bits and bobs when you are baking, like a few stray chocolate chips, some sweetened coconut left from German chocolate cake, dried fruit, marshmallows, etc. You know, too much to throw away but not enough to do much with. Then you use this mixture when you are baking and need something for that cookie recipe for example. I’ve been keeping these bits in my freezer in plastic bags. So my garbage jar has in it:
- coconut
- walnut bits
- a bit of german chocolate
- chopped pecans
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- dried blueberries
- dried figs
- dried dates
- golden raisins (I’m not fond of raisins but had some for something I made for someone else)
- old fashioned oats (the little bit in the bottom of the box)
I plan to make some kind of bar thingie, like maybe a blondie or an oatmeal bar. Something that won’t send my blood sugar sky high but will give my tastebuds a jolt. Stay tuned.
