What is the difference between acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin?

  • Acetaminophen is the common name for N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP). In other countries, it may be called paracetamol. It reduces pain signals in your nervous system and reduces fever. (Tylenol, etc.)
  • Ibuprofen is an NSAID related to aspirin and naproxen. Like acetaminophen, NSAIDs reduce pain and fever. Ibuprofen also reduces inflammation. (Motrin, Advil, etc.)
  • Naproxen is another NSAID. Like ibuprofen, it treats body aches, swelling, and fever. It lasts longer than ibuprofen but can start working more slowly. (Aleve)
  • Aspirin is another NSAID that reduces fever and treats pain. It can also protect the heart in people who’ve had a heart attack or stroke, or who are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It’s more commonly used for its heart benefits versus pain relief.
